Tënküi: Reincorporating Traditional Textiles into Children’s Everyday Lives, a research-driven project accompanied by a lifestyle and interiors collection. The goal is to help children in Mexico connect with traditional textiles by seeing them incorporated into objects they interact with every day. Tënküi means "to hug oneself" in Nahuatl.
This project was fully co-designed along artisans from Ecatlan, Jonotla Puebla, México. Making sure the designs and materials were respectful, appropiate and representative of the community's traditions.
As part of the project, we also created “Tënküi, the Adventurous Jaguar”, a children’s book designed as a research tool to spark interest in textiles and foster identification with these traditions. I had the chance to illustrate this book.
The collection itself includes curtains, blankets, rugs, socks, plush toys, and more; each piece bridging heritage and daily life, making traditional craftsmanship playful, relatable, and tangible for young audiences. Each material was carefully chosen for the kid's comfort and safety.
In this gallery you will find sketches, technical drawings, renders and photos and videos of the final products for each garment from this collection.
